If you have a child that is a picky eater, children’s feeding therapy can be significantly life-changing for you and your child.

Children’s feeding therapy is ideal for any and all children who seem to be extremely picky at meal times. This could mean anything from refusing to eat, gagging, or even throwing a tantrum. Feeding time should not be a battle in public or in your home.

Why Feeding Therapy?children's feeding therapy

There are different reasons why parents might look into children’s feeding therapy. Your child might make it extremely difficult for you during mealtime due to being an extremely picky eater. However, some children are on the autism spectrum and there could be underlying reasons why they refuse to eat certain foods. Feeding therapy involves occupational therapists working side-by-side with children and teaching them how to eat better, or eat in general. Therapies are usually about an hour and it is recommended to do five days a week, for up to three weeks.

How Does Feeding Therapy Work?

Occupational therapists work closely with children in order to recognize the eating patterns children have. Therapists determine what food types, such as flavors and colors, causes children to reject eating. This is called an evaluation and therapists can or will request a “swallow study” to rule out aspiration/dysphasia. Occupational therapists are experienced when it comes to child behavioral patterns developing strategies to help with motor and sensory controls.
